Chairman's Message
Jose Ramon (IKE) Altavas - ASPAC Chair 2014-2015
At a young age of 25 years old, IKE became a Kiwanian when his father Mabini invited him as Charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Kapis in 1976. IKE was born January 27, 1953 Born under the Chinese zodiac sign of a “water snake” aptly describing his traits as “influential, motivated, insightful and highly intellectual ”.
IKE is married to Josie with five (5) children namely Juan, Bianca, Francesca who are Kiwanians while Jaime and Maria, are Circle K members. He dreams that his three (3) grandchildren shall soon become Kiwanis torchbearers. Oftentimes, he says “Kiwanis is in the blood”.
Thirty five (35) years ago, his journey to become a District Governor in 2004-05 began from assuming various club, divisional and district leadership roles such as a a distinguished club member, a club builder, club secretary, a multi--coral club awardee during his club presidency, trustee of the Philippine South District Foundation, District Coordinator of the Eliminate project, and recently appointed as Secretary/Treasurer of the ASPAC Board for KY 2012-13 and ASPAC Chairman –elect for KY 2013-14.
His exemplary leadership manifests “in actions more than words” of his various achievements and performances, dedicated more than half of his life to serve the children in grassroots communities. To be precise, Ike’s word is his work. It was all of a piece. His “finest hours” are when he is with children and volunteers in communities he visited and assisted, projects he directed and assisted, leaders he guided and inspired.
Kiwanian IKE initiated sustainable programs from the ground serving as “visible gateways” of Kiwanis mandated programs for children welfare, maternal health, IDD, Read Around the World, The Eliminate MNT project.
Kiwanian IKE is the prime mover of a district-wide campaign against hunger and malnutrition by launching feeding programs in more than 800 sites since 2009, serving more than 100,000 children up to this day – The House of St. Joseph – Kiwanis Kids Feeding Program, enjoining the active participation of more than 50 Kiwanis clubs in partnerships with Risen Savior Missions, Feed My Starving Children and KIF, allied local and global organizations. This humanitarian endeavors was awarded as one of the Best District Project during the 36th ASPAC Convention, Melaka, Malaysia bestowing honor and recognition to all Kiwanis clubs of our district.
His hands on leadership has successfully implemented a district- wide Kiwanis Book Bank project In partnership with the Asia Foundation and KIF which sustains KI’s Read Around the World program since 2002. It had spoken volumes of his passion and commitment to improve literacy and readership skills of children by providing more than 180,000 books titles uo to this day to more than 5,000 schools through a network of Kiwanis clubs, schools, libraries and child day care centers. The program was awarded as one of the Best District Project during the 30th ASPAC Convention, Melbourne, Australia.
During the 37th ASPAC Convention at Sri Lanka, Colombo, Kwn. IKE brought into fore the KIWANIS GO GREEN PROJECT which he conceptualized and implemented with a loosely organized satellite group called Kiwanians Beyond Borders hundreds of volunteers from the Circle K – Filamer Christian University to implement “a brand on, environmental outreach action projects” on coastal communities such as beach clean ups, mangroves planting, carbon exchange and coral reef rehabilitation serving as modules for Kiwanis clubs in our district to follow through.
Again this project won as one of the Best District Project in the ASPAC region. The project has recently found great relevance due to the devastating effects of a recent super typhoon named Haiyan that hit the major regions of the Philippine South District due to the disastrous effects of climate change and environmental degradation. It was a project idea whose time has come. The green projects are ongoing.
“MANIFEST KIWANIS” through service is IKE’s mission-vision. Believing that the best days of the year is doing service . It is not really doing the greatest things that matter but the good things that we do every day that define Kiwanis forever. It’s his power of doing making Kiwanis known, letting his actions speak.
Thus, his humble quest for the Chairmanship.
